Stony Brook University professor Patrice Nganang was released from prison in Cameroon by a court decision on December 27, 2017.
Nganang, 47, teaches in Stony Brook University's Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature Department in New York. He was taken into custody by Cameroon authorities on December 7 when he tried to leave the country and was then charged with multiple offenses for a Facebook post he wrote that insulted Cameroonian president Paul Biya.
The Cameroonian-American professor had all charges against him dropped in court. He was then deported from the country of his birth and permitted to return to the US.
“They put me on a plane and I didn’t know where I was going,” Nganang said from his home in Hopewell, New Jersey. “I was happy to see the US Embassy reunited me with my wife, who came to pick me up. There was no reason for them to have put me on a plane to DC.”
Endangered Scholars Worldwide welcomes this news with great relief and calls on Cameroonian authorities to continue to respect, guarantee, and implement the provisions and principles of human rights as specified in international conventions and treaties to which Cameroon has long been a signatory.
